Warez (sometimes stylized as wares or WareZ) is a slang term for software that is illegally distributed on the internet, usually circumventing copyright laws. It can include pirated versions of commercial software, illegally obtained software codes, or even stolen software.

Warez dates back to the late 1980s when bulletin board systems (BBS) were popular platforms for sharing software. By the 1990s, hackers and Internet pirates had established warez networks as a way to distribute pirated software and IP-protected materials across the Internet. Several warez groups operate in the dark web, and some larger groups form connections among sites to increase their reach.

Warez sites usually exist as private forums or chatrooms, with access given only to members. They are often organized by the type of software they distribute, such as games, utilities, or audio-visual materials. Pirated software is typically distributed as a computer file, usually in a popular compressed archive format like ZIP.

Because of the illegal nature of warez, users who distribute or access these materials are often vulnerable to legal action. Software companies and copyright holders invest significant resources into tracking down distributors and prosecuting them for copyright infringement. Additionally, the spread of malware and other malicious code is a common occurrence within warez networks.

Though the availability of warez and illegal software downloading continues to remain a problem, it is no longer the only form of software piracy. With the advances in technology and the proliferation of Internet use, new methods of software piracy such as serial number cracking and keygen generators have become increasingly prevalent.
