Phishing

Phishing is a type of cybercrime in which the perpetrator attempts to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, credit card details, and other personal data by masquerading as a legitimate entity. It typically involves the use of deceptive e-mails, malicious websites, instant messaging services, and messages sent through social media.

Phishing attacks are commonly carried out by socially engineering victims, i.e., manipulating the victim to believe the messages are legitimate. The attacker often attaches malicious files or links in the e-mail or website so when the victim clicks on it, malware is installed on their system. Once the malware is installed, the attacker can gain access to the victim’s device, files, and network.

A key component of phishing is social engineering. Attackers can use methods such as creating hoax websites, sending spoofed messages, or attempting to establish credibility by claiming to be from a legitimate organization. These fraudulent messages will often contain an element of urgency to induce a response from the victim, often asking them to click a link and enter sensitive information.

To protect against phishing attacks, it is important to verify the authenticity of websites or messages, as well as not to open any unsolicited links or attachments that appear suspicious. Additionally, users should exercise caution when providing personal information online or over the phone. Companies should also ensure their employees are aware of the latest phishing scams and implement rigorous cybersecurity measures to protect their data.
