Agent-based Model (ABM) is a type of computer-based model that can be used to simulate the behavior of complex systems. It is a simulation technique commonly used in Artificial Intelligence, computational economics, and social science research. ABMs are used to investigate phenomena in a wide variety of fields, ranging from organizational behavior and social networks to financial markets and ecological science.

ABMs are composed of individual “agents”—normally in the form of autonomous entities—that interact with one another over a period of time in a virtual environment, such as a computer simulation. Agents may represent members of real-world populations, and their behavior can be based on rules that model how actual people or things would interact. Through the interactions of the agents within the model, ABMs can explore and explain the differences in behavior that can arise from different sets of rules or initial conditions.

One key benefit of ABM is its ability to address complex multi-agent systems, situations where the behavior of the collective system is determined by the actions of many constituent agents operating at different scales. ABM provides a powerful tool for studying the emergent behaviors that can arise from simple interactions between individual agents, making it a versatile tool to analyze questions of self-organization, emergence, and network dynamics.

A limitation of ABM is that it may be difficult to capture heterogenous agent behavior in a single model. The agent components may be complex and require sophisticated design to accurately model certain aspects of the environment. Although some tools, such as Swarm or MASON, contain libraries of models and algorithms to facilitate the development of ABMs, designing and constructing an appropriate agent-based model from scratch can be a complicated and time-consuming task.

Despite these difficulties, ABMs have proven to be an invaluable tool in understanding the complexity and organization of natural systems. Its wide range of applications and powerful analytics make it an indispensable model for social scientists, computer scientists, and policy makers alike.
