Wide Area Network (WAN) is a computer network that spans a wide geographic area, often connecting multiple outlets, offices, or regions over an area much larger than a single city or metro area. WANs typically make use of high-speed, leased transmission lines, such as those from telephone service providers, to create wide area data transmission links to networks in multiple locations. Common types of WANs include ATM-based networks and packet-switching networks.

WANs allow computers and other networked devices to communicate across a great distance, enabling businesses and organizations to expand their operations to multiple locations and better facilitate communication between offices. WANs are especially useful for connecting multiple branch locations of a single company, as well as for providing connectivity to a corporate intranet.
