Web server

A web server is a type of computer system connected to a computer network that delivers webpages (e.g. HTML documents, images, videos) to web browsers (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Edge) as and when requested by users. Web servers typically host websites, web applications, and databases.

Web servers are categorized as either home-based or enterprise-level web servers. Home-based web servers are used to serve web content from an individual’s personal computer. Enterprise-level web servers are more powerful and are capable of delivering large amounts of webpages, databases, and specialized web applications by multiple users.

To carry out its purpose, a web server needs server software and a network protocol for communication with clients and other servers. The most common protocol used for web communication is the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). To create dynamic webpages the server needs programming with dynamic scripting languages such as PHP, Perl, Ruby, and Python.

To ensure the security of the server and its data, web administrators need to install software that is designed to strengthen the security of the web server. Such software includes firewalls, antivirus, and malware protection. Web server administrators should also make sure that the web server and its applications are up to date with the latest security patches.

Web servers are essential components in running a successful website, online application, or database as they enable users to access webpages in real-time over the internet. Without a web server, the webpages and web applications would not exist.
