Walled garden

A walled garden is a closed system of online content and services that are tightly controlled by the provider, meaning users are limited in the actions they can take in regards to entering and exiting the service. It is also referred to as a “walled garden network.” Many companies, such as Apple and Microsoft, use walled gardens to maintain control and security of their services, such as the App Store and Xbox Live.

Walled gardens exist to keep users within the confines of the service and ensure they are not exposed to content that could violate usage agreements or put them at risk. By restricting access, providers can ensure stability of the platform and defend against malicious attacks. Walled gardens also prevent users from “roaming” to other networks and services. The walled garden model is beneficial to providers as it gives them the ability to control the user experience and generate revenue through subscriptions or in-app purchases.

For users, the walled garden model does not offer full autonomy or access to as many services as they might find without the restriction. It imposes limitations on users while also providing the assurance of safety and security.
