Storage is a term used to describe the process of saving electronic data on a device or server. Data is stored on media as a set of 0s and 1s, which are then converted into a readable format. In large-scale storage systems, data is often stored sequentially on multiple pieces of media even if they are from different storage media types. This is known as a RAID system (Redundant Array of Independent Disks).

Storage media has a finite capacity, and thus, data that is no longer needed must be deleted or moved to a different storage medium. Storing data in multiple locations is an important aspect of managing data effectively on any type of storage system.

Storage systems can be divided into three main categories: direct access storage (DAS), network attached storage (NAS), and storage area networks (SANs). DAS is a storage system where data is stored directly on the device, such as on a hard drive. NAS is a storage system that uses a network to access data stored on physical storage nodes. SANs are a combination of DAS and NAS-like technologies, as data is stored on a server but accessed via a network.

Security is another important factor when considering storage, as data must remain secure and confidential. To achieve this, encryption is used to scramble data so that it is unreadable if intercepted. Encryption also ensures that data is not modified without authorization. Additionally, storage systems should be backed up regularly in case of hardware or software failure.

Storage is a vital component of modern computing systems, as it allows for secure, reliable, and rapid access to data. As data creation and consumption have increased over the years, so too has the need for efficient and secure storage systems.
