Stalkerware

Stalkerware is a type of malicious software that is used by malicious individuals to track location and activities of an unsuspecting victim. It is also used by hostile ex-partners or employers to monitor activities, communications, and locations of current or former partners or employees. The term is derived from the phrase “stalking”, which is defined as the act of harassing someone through a series of intrusive and unwanted behaviors.

Additionally, stalkerware can be used to monitor web activity or access sensitive information such as passwords, financial information, and social media accounts. In extreme cases, stalkerware can be used to take control of the device and initiate malicious acts, such as sending malicious emails or messages or accessing sensitive files.

Stalkerware is difficult to detect as it is typically hidden or disguised as an unassuming, benign application. Victims of stalkerware can be unaware of the malicious activity taking place on their device, as the malicious actors may not alert the victim that their device is being monitored. It is estimated that there are over a hundred different stalkerware applications in circulation, with more being developed every day.

The use of stalkerware is illegal in many countries since it enables malicious actors to invade the privacy of their victims without their consent. It can also be dangerous to the victim as their actions and whereabouts can be easily monitored and controlled by their stalker. It is important for users to be aware and educate themselves on stalkerware, as well as to protect their devices from stalkerware and other malicious software by installing antivirus software and utilizing strong passwords.
