Source code is the fundamental element of any computer program, application, or software system. It is the set of instructions, written in a programming language like C, Java, HTML, JavaScript, PHP, or Python, that tell a computer what to do and how to do it. In short, source code is the text or code written by a programmer or developer to create an application or system.

The most common source code types include assembly language, script language, high-level language, and machine language. Assembly language contains mnemonics, or abbreviations, for computer instruction codes like add, subtract, and compare. Script language can be used to create web applications, scripts that serve as the bridge between databases and websites, and more. High-level source code contains understandable language with which a programmer can write code in a more compact and easier to understand way. Lastly, machine language consists of 0s and 1s that next to each other represent instructions for the computer.

Source code can be used to develop computer programs, websites, mobile applications, systems, and more. The source code is usually written and compiled in its own text editor, and then converted into a file through a compiler to make it executable by the computer. It is then ready to be executed as a program.

The importance of source code management relies on its ability to store and track changes to the source code of a program so that it can be improved or debugged over time. Generally, source code management tools keep track of the history of changes and provide an organized version-controlled repository.

Source code is an integral part of the computer programming and software development process and is often referred to as the “blueprint” of a program.
