Server

Server is a computer system or computer program that provides functionality for other programs or devices, known as clients. It often refers to a computer program or device that manages access to a centralized resource or service in a network.

Servers are utilized in many applications such as web servers, file servers, application servers, fax servers, proxy servers, media servers, and more. They are usually devoted to handling tasks or requests from many clients, such as serving web pages or providing email services.

Different types of servers include web servers, application servers, database servers, game servers, proxy servers, file servers, and virtual servers. Web servers serve web pages to browsers via the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). Application servers provide services used by applications, such as web services. Database servers store and manage databases. Game servers host online multiplayer games. Proxy servers act as intermediaries when clients request data from other servers. File servers store data in files for users and applications. Virtual servers are virtual machines hosted on a physical server.

Server adminstrators manage and maintain one or more computers, allocated space on a computer, provide authentication for access, maintain the operating system and software, provide systems support, and more.

Server security is important to protecting the network and its clients from malicious activities such as unauthorized access, malware, and data loss. Security measures such as firewalls, encryption, access control, and authentication can be implemented to secure servers.
