A remote user is an individual who accesses a remote device, services, or software over a network, usually at a geographically distant location. Users might connect from home, coffee shops, places of business, co-working spaces, or anywhere else a user may be located.

There is a certain degree of anonymity that comes with being a remote user. This is because while the user is theoretically connected to a reliable source, the machine on the other end does not have physical visibility of the user. With the evolution of cloud-based services, the user is unable to know where the data or software is actually located; they merely access and interact with it from their location.

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and Virtual Desktops (VDI) are two solutions commonly used by remote users in order to protect their privacy.
