Network is a term used in the computing world to describe the interconnectedness of two or more individual computing devices. These devices are usually linked in order to facilitate communication, exchange information and resources, or provide access to distributed services or applications. Networks can range from the smallest, private networks to the massive, complex systems created by large organizations.
Networks are typically classified by the type of connections used to interconnect the multiple computing devices. These connections range from simple point-to-point or peer-to-peer links to more complex connection topologies such as rings, meshes, or hubs. Networks also may be organized into LANs (Local Area Networks) or WANs (Wide Area Networks). LANs have the advantage of high speed connectivity and are often managed and maintained by a single organization. WANs have the benefit of greater reach and allow for the connection of multiple LANs that are geographically distributed.
Network topology is the physical or logical architecture of a network that determines how different nodes will communicate with each other, how the data flows, how many different nodes can be connected, and which ones should be preferred. Some of the most common topologies include star, bus, ring, mesh, and tree.
Modern networks often use a hybrid form of network architecture which includes features from multiple topologies. There are also virtual private networks (VPN) which make use of private networks but allow them to be securely accessed remotely.
Network security is a major concern for organizations as it allows for the protection of data and resources from sabotage or unauthorized access. Common security measures include encryption, authentication, and authorization.
Network technologies play a large role in the modern, interconnected world. From simple home networks to complex corporate networks, networks are essential in facilitating communication, providing access to shared resources, and connecting the world.
