Firewalls

Firewalls are a form of network security that monitors and controls a connection or a computer network from malicious activity. They can be either hardware or software-based solutions, and are most commonly applied at the gateway server level to ensure the security of the entire network. The goal of a firewall is to prevent malicious users from accessing unauthorized resources within a private network.

Firewalls work by storing a set of rules, referred to as ruleset, to which any incoming or outgoing traffic needs to adhere. If an incoming or outgoing traffic does not abide by the ruleset, the firewall will take action to prevent the transfer. Stateful inspection firewalls evaluates and monitors the state of each connection among the resources, as opposed to individual packets of data.
