Denary, also known as decimal, or base-10, is an arithmetic system commonly used in computers, programming, and cybersecurity. Consisting of numbers 0 through 9, Denary is the most widely used number system in the world and allows for easy calculation of numerical equations.

In computers, Denary is used to represent all digital information. Each digit has an assigned value, with the most significant digit represented first. The first digit (from left to right) is the “most significant” digit and is assigned the value of 10 to the power of its position. For example, a one-digit number is 10^0 and a two-digit number is 10^1. This allows numbers to be represented in the Denary system up to 999 in computer systems; however, higher values can be represented with larger numbers when utilizing scientific notation.

In programming, Denary numbers can be used for mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as other more complex manipulations. Denary can be used to represent data as an array of 1’s and 0’s (commonly referred to as binary) or converted to other formats such as floating-point® notation which can represent numerical values to a higher degree of precision.

Denary is also used in cybersecurity for the purpose of encryption. It is used in algorithms that take plain text and cipher it to form encrypted data which can be decoded by authorized users with the key or password. Denary is also used to represent complex passwords with multiple combinations of characters.

Because of its wide range of applications, Denary is an important system used in computers, programming, and cybersecurity. It is a versatile system that can be used for a variety of tasks and is quickly becoming one of the most widely used systems in data science.
