Back-translation

Back-translation is a method used to verify the accuracy of language translations. The method involves translating a text from one language into a second language and then reversing the translation back to the original language. This verifies that the two languages have been accurately translated, as the back-translated text should match the original text.

When localizing software, back-translation is part of a three-step process beginning with translation, then localization, and then back-translation. In the first step, a native translator translates the original text into the target language. Following this, the localized text is edited by an editor for accuracy and any necessary changes to adapt it to the target culture or language. The last step of this process is back-translation. In this final step, a different native translator translates the localized text back to the original language. This is then compared to the original text to verify accuracy.

Back-translation has some disadvantages. It does not consider potential changes to words and phrases due to culture, context, or dialect. Additionally, the accuracy of back-translation is sensitive to the quality of the translator, as they must possess the knowledge to accurately back-translate the original text.
