Account hijacking

Account hijacking is the unauthorized control or access to a computer, website, social media account, or other internet-connected service. It usually occurs when an individual or group uses stolen credentials to gain access to the account of someone else, allowing them to take control of the account.

Proxy servers

Proxy servers are an important tool in preventing account hijacking. A proxy server provides an intermediary between a user and an internet service, keeping some information anonymous by not revealing the exact web address being accessed and hiding the origin of the user’s internet connection. With a proxy server in place, even if a hacker gets into a user’s account, they will be unable to pinpoint the location or IP address from which the initial connection was made. This extra layer of security helps minimize the risk of account hijacking.

Open proxies

Proxy servers come in many forms. Most commonly, they are either open proxies, which are designed to allow a connection from any IP address; or closed proxies, which require authentication. Other services include reverse proxies, which reroute traffic from one server to another; and anonymous proxies, which use encryption to further hide the user’s original location.
