How to install a proxy server on your computer and what you need to do

For many people, the question of installing a proxy server becomes relevant. Such a move will allow you to remain anonymous on the Web, secure your IP address. And most importantly, it will provide access to almost any node in the network, regardless of your physical location and existing prohibitions of your country and provider.

What you should know before installing a proxy server at home

Make sure you understand the difference between setting up a proxy on a PC for individual programs and applications and turning your home PC into a proxy server.

In the first case, you can:

• Optimize and accelerate application performance, and improve application quality;
• to make yourself anonymous when visiting individual sites;
• access previously banned resources (or resources that are not allowed to access under your current ip address).

So, Skype through a proxy will avoid a lot of problems. Such as slow connection speeds, conversation or video broadcast problems (these are a variety of freezing, audio and video hang-ups, disconnections and loss of picture and sound, or slow data transfer (your companion hears you, but with a serious delay)).

You can use automatic configurations to make proxy settings on Skype. But often the program does not want to work like this and generates errors. Then it’s better to use the manual setting. To do this, go to the settings and select “Connection”, there we will find the remote connection, network settings or proxy selection.

Next, we type the values into the corresponding rows. (All values can be obtained by finding a free proxy through a browser search engine. Proxy server for Skype must be checked – make a call, start broadcasting video. In this way, we will be able to assess the presence and number of delays and problems. If there are more of them than when we didn’t use a proxy, it’s worth finding another server and trying to run the program on it.

How to enable proxy on browsers

The second option for using a proxy is to set up browsers. If in the case of Skype we have optimized the work of the program, improved the quality of communication, then in the case of browsers we unlock the resources that were previously not available to us, we get another ip, which makes us an anonymous user.

Regardless of the version and type of variants, there are only two ways to enable proxy in a browser.

In the first case, you need to go to the application settings, find items to configure the network or connect to a remote server, and then in the appropriate items to specify the addresses and access ports. After that, if there were no errors, the browser will work under the proxy.

To check this, you can go to any Internet speed measurement site before setting up and remember the existing values: speed, ping, ip address. Next, when we have changed the proxy server settings in the browser, we visit the same site again and look at the changes.

The speed shouldn’t fall, the ping shouldn’t go up more than it was, but the ip address should change. If all requirements are met, it means that the setting has been done correctly and the browser can be used.

The second option is to use automatic settings. Connection through a proxy server in automatic mode implies the use of special raz-files, which have already specified the configuration of settings.

In this case, reopen the browser settings and find the automatic settings, or go back to the network settings and choose the path where our raz-file is placed.

There could be two options:

• local storage;
• storage on a remote server.

In both cases, there is no need to register a proxy server. When placing the file in the local storage we find the file on the hard disks of our PC (having previously found it in the network and saved it on our PC). In the second case, the file is stored on a remote server (the path to it can be found just on the site where the proxy itself was found; there should be a brief instruction and, actually, the path to the configuration file). Nothing prevents us from setting the path to both local and remote storage. Provided both files are identical.

Now, as well as in case of manual settings, we can check up functionality of a browser – to measure its speed before the beginning of work with options and after.

Configuring the proxy server on your computer and its features

This is a very convenient option – you can install a proxy on your home PC and, while at work, connecting to it, you can bypass the locks of your system administrator.

Another example is if you are in another country, but want to make payment on some site only in rubles. The most striking example is Steam. The site determines your location and regardless of your registration (for example, registration was made in Russia, payment and prices will be displayed in the currency of the area where you are located). In particular, having a Russian account and being in Poland, you will see the prices only in zloty. To fix this problem, we are going to configure the proxy server on the computer.

As one example we will take a free application with a proxy server called 3proxy. It can be downloaded directly from the official server. After visiting the website, we download the latest version, unzip it after downloading and go to the BIN folder. There we find the configuration file (it has the name of the program and the extension cfg). If he’s not here, we’ll create him.

Open the file in the text editor and type the following lines:

Auth none

Log.

Proxy

This disables the need for authorization and enables logging (logging of procedures performed and actions to be displayed on the command line).

The next step is to check the proxy connection settings. For this purpose we start the program and connect to our newly created server. For this purpose we use our ip address. We also set up port 3128 (it is usually used by default). This way, we have created our own proxy server on our own PC and we can use it at any time.

It should be noted that the proxy setting on the computer is not limited to this program alone. There’s a lot of them on the web. The example given is far from being the most optimal or functional and is only used as an example.
